HappensNext™ — Ontario Severance, Layoff & Career Transition Toolkit
An independent, client-side educational platform helping Canadian professionals navigate restructuring, find Ontario employment-law resources, plan their financial runway, and stabilize their first 48 hours. Planning data stays on the visitor's device.
The First 48 Hours: Emergency Stabilization Protocol
- Review Before Signing: Take time to understand your separation documents and seek advice from an Ontario-licensed employment lawyer about your contract, statutory minimums, and possible common-law entitlements.
- Check Your Record of Employment (ROE): Confirm when your employer will issue your ROE. Electronic filing deadlines depend on pay frequency and the circumstances of the interruption of earnings; consult Service Canada's official guidance.
- Document Your Job Search: Keep a record of reasonable efforts to find comparable employment and discuss any duty to mitigate with your employment lawyer.
Ontario Severance Resources & Legal Frameworks
HappensNext provides curated links to independent Ontario employment-law resources for review and self-assessment. It does not calculate severance, collect employment inputs for a severance assessment, or evaluate separation packages.
- Statutory Minimums (ESA, 2000): Ontario's Employment Standards Act, 2000 sets minimum termination and severance entitlements where applicable. Eligibility, exceptions, service requirements, and employer criteria must be assessed for each situation.
- Reasonable Notice at Common Law (Bardal Factors): Factors associated with Bardal v. Globe & Mail Ltd. include the character of employment, length of service, age, and availability of similar employment. An Ontario-licensed employment lawyer can advise on their relevance to your circumstances and contract.
HappensNext is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or receiving referral fees from the listed law firms.
Federal Employment Insurance (EI) & Financial Runway Modeling
Educational EI guidance and device-only budget models support planning around income, expenses, and financial runway. Service Canada determines EI eligibility and benefits; insurable-hour requirements, benefit limits, waiting periods, and separation-earnings rules depend on individual circumstances and current measures. Consult official guidance rather than treating a planning scenario as an entitlement decision.
Device-Only Planning Data & Privacy
Planning entries, profile preferences, resume data, and financial projections are processed in the browser and saved in localStorage on the visitor's own device. HappensNext does not use hosted visitor databases, accounts, cookies, analytics, tracking pixels, monitoring SDKs, or service workers. App-scoped local data can be cleared without deleting unrelated browser storage.
The sole visitor-entry transmission is an explicitly submitted Feedback Hub section and comment sent to the owner's Google Apps Script endpoint, with a fixed "Anonymous" email placeholder and a spam-check value. No personal data is requested. Feedback is sent without cookies or credentials; receipt cannot be confirmed, and hosting and provider logging are unverified.
